German artist Niclas Castello unveiled an $11.7 million “Gold Cube” artwork in New York’s Central Park, which was on display for a day. The 410-pound (186-kg) cube is reportedly made of pure, 24-karat, 999.9 fine gold. According to Castello’s official press release, the Gold Cube took over 4500 hours of work and was produced by Art Foundry H. Rüetschi in Aarau (Switzerland). The document also revealed that the artwork promoted the artist’s cryptocurrency, the Castello Coin.

The gold cube was protected by a protection unit on Wednesday. Castello had earlier teased the gold cube by getting several trucks (which displayed the mysterious coordinates of the location) to drive around Times Square. According to Artnet, Niclas Castello (aka Norbert Zerbs) is a contemporary artist from East Germany and was born on July 21, 1978. The 43-year-old artist was reportedly influenced by the fall of the Berlin Wall. He exhibits his artwork inspired by neo-expressionism, pop art, and street art, among others.

German Artist Hides Pure Gold Cube

In the late 1990s, Niclas Castello was interested in the street art culture of Germany and then moved to Paris in 2003. The Neuhaus am Rennweg native later moved to New York, where he generated much of his artistic manner. During that time, Castello worked on numerous art projects in different galleries in the United States and Europe. In the Biography section of his website, Castello credits American video artist Arleen Schloss as his mentor. He reportedly lived with her for two years at Schloss’s place in New York. The German artist is presently based out of New York and Switzerland.

The artist is pleasingly known for his sculptures such as The Kiss and his critically praised artwork, Cube-Painting-Sculpture (released in 2016). His other works include several cube-inspired structures. According to Artnet, Castello presently has about 20 artworks available for purchase. These contain six paintings and nine sculptures, along with prints and installations. While some of his sculptures and paintings are exclusively available at auction, others can be purchased at exorbitantly high prices. Meanwhile, his print works are available for $20,000 to $30,000.
