The Sikh politician and congress leader from Punjab Mrs. Surjit Kaur Barnala passed away on Monday in Mohali at age 91. She was battling with the prolonged illness for a long time. Surjit Kaur was the president of Shiromani Akali Dal and a two-time MLA from Hoshiyarpur’s Tanda. She was a cabinet minister in the Harcharan Singh Brar-led government in Punjab. She won from the Tanda assembly constituency in 1980 and 1992. She has become the cabinet minister in the Harcharan Singh Brar-led government in Punjab. also tweeted that, “Sad to learn the demise of veteran INC Punjab leader Surjit Kaur Kalkat from district Hoshiarpur passed away. My heartfelt condolence to the family and supporters. RIP”. The news of her demise is confirmed by her younger song on social media. He stated that she was suffering from a prolonged illness and treatment was underway. They admitted her to the hospital on Sunday where she took her last breath. The final rites of Surjit Kaur will be performed by her family on Tuesday. Her husband Dr. Amir Singh Kalkat was also a congress leader from the Hoshiarpur constituency. He became the cabinet minister of the Tanda constituency in 1969 and 1972.
Surjit Singh had a daughter Amrit Kaur Sandhu and three sons. Their eldest son Jasjit Singh Barnala is a businessman and owner of Barnas International Private Limited. Gaganjit Singh Barala is also a politician and joined the congress Janta party. Their youngest son Neilinder Singh Barnala died in a car accident in 1996. Dr. Amir Singh died on 14th January 2017 due to a prolonged illness and served by his family in Hoshiarpur. Surjit Kaur Barnala was the president of Shiromani Akali Dal and promoted the thinking of Harcharan Singh Longowal.
She got the Rajiv-Longowal accord which was completely implemented. She passed away at age 91 in Mohali on Monday. She has undergone treatment from Mohali where she took her last breath on Monday. Several former ministers of Congress Janta PArty and other party leaders expressed their condolences on social media. The Chief Minister of Punjab Mr. Amrinder Singh has also tweeted his grief in his post. The last rites will be performed by the family in Mohali on Tuesday.
