History
Valmiki was the first poet of India who underwent a rigorous penance. Valmiki was born as Agni Sharma, the preacher of Bhrigu gotra who was a Brahmin. Once he met the great sage Narada and with this, he gave a discourse and, inspired by the words of Narada Ji, he started doing penance and chanted the word “Maara” which meant dying.
He chanted the word for many years and later the word was transformed into Ram. At that time, huge anthills were built around Agni Sharma and as a result, he got the name Valmiki.
First Shloka
Once Valmiki went to bathe in the Ganges river, where he saw many birds who saw a very beautiful smile on his face, but suddenly the male bird of those birds got an arrow and the bird died on the spot, this pathetic sight Valmiki Ji’s heart melted and to see who shot the innocent bird, he looked around and his eyes were on the hunter who had a bow and arrow in his hand, then Valmiki Ji could not stop himself after seeing the hunter and a shloka came out of his mouth in anger which is like this.
मा निषाद प्रतिष्ठां त्वमगमः शाश्वतीः समाः।यत्क्रौञ्चमिथुनादेकमवधीः काममोहितम्॥’

Emerging from Valmiki’s anger and sorrow, it is considered to be the first verse in spontaneous Sanskrit literature. Later, with the blessings of Lord Brahma, Valmiki composed the entire Ramayana comprising 24,000 verses and 7 cantos, the verse which originated from his wrath is revered as the first verse in Hindu literature. Valmiki is worshiped as the first poet of India.
