He died on the spot. According to the Police, the US Coast Guard save from the water. He was afterward announced dead at Staten Island University Hospital. In a statement following Roman’s death, Benny Boscio, President of the Correction Officer’s Benevolent Association, highlighted the pressures and working conditions that correction officers experience.
” Corrections officer Roman was a kind-hearted person and respected by his fellow officers. He had his entire life and career ahead of him,” Boccio said. “This tragedy is also a grim reminder of the enormous stress corrections officers are under on a daily basis. The deteriorating situation in our prisons does not affect only the prisoners. Our officers go to work daily not knowing if they will come back or not. They go to work daily not knowing if they will miss time with their loved ones as they are forced to work a double or triple shift.”
Boscio said The incident happened only one day after New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed a directorial order to address staffing concerns and jail conditions. A panel made by lawyer Brendan Mc Guire and Deputy Mayor for Public security Phil Banks will look to resolve the concerns.”
I call on the newly formed Rikers Task Force to instantly address the psychological toll this job takes on my members and to provide them with more access to counseling and other support services,’ Our hearts are broken and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer Roman and his fellow officers. We will do everything possible to support them at this painful time.” Stay tuned for more updates.
