Betway’s ambassador and former England cricketing legend, Kevin Pietersen jotted down his favorite players from the 2022 T20 World Cup that was held in Australia. Spanning from his own native country of England, his selections include various players from countries like India, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and South Africa.
From Sri Lanka, Pietersen’s pick is Wanindu Hasaranga. Pietersen acknowledges Hasaranga’s consecutive wicket-wins in the T20 world cups that the player played. He knows that if it comes to it, “the leggy [Hasaranga] can count himself among the premier white-ball spinners around.” Just 25 years of age, the right-arm leg break bowler is very well recognized for his amazing spins regardless of pitch type. The player stands at the topmost position in the ICC Ranking of bowlers at present.
Moving On, Pietersen names Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shadab Khan from Pakistan. Pietersen says that Shadab was the main reason that Pakistan made it into the final of the T20 World cup of 2022. Shadab showed furiously both his balling capability and batting talent against South Africa in the knockouts, says Pietersen. However, at the same time, Kevin mourns the injury of Afridi in the final that followed. Pietersen even to this day believes that if it had been him (Afridi), maybe the green squad stood a better chance in the finals.
From New Zealand, he selects Glenn Philips (obviously), from Zimbabwe – Sikandar Raza, and from South Africa – Anrich Nortje. Pietersen’s sheer selection of the ‘creams’ of cricketers shows just how well-versed he is with the complexities of cricket and the latest happenings in the game around the world. Nortje, he says, possesses his pace bowling as one of his most formidable weapons in the game.
Same way, Raza, he feels has been one of his all-time favorite all-rounders and was successful in catching Pietersen’s eye in the game. Among the Black Caps, Phillips is, Pietersen says, was “the most impressive batter”. Kevin says that his (Phillips) scoring a century against Sri Lanka was one of the best innings of the World Cup.
Among the England cricketers, he named Jos Buttler, Sam Curren, and Alex Hales. Pietersen says that Buttler was England’s top scorer, Hales has always delivered when it mattered, and Curran was easily one of the “key players for his team as [England] look to defend their white-ball crowns.” From India however, Pietersen picked Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav. One, Pietersen feels, has been the “highlight of the tournament”, while another Yadav is “one of the best white-ball batters around at the moment.”
