The well-known Kashmiri leader Mirza Afzal Beg and brother of Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehboob Beg passed away on 24th May, Monday. Many party leaders have shown their condolence on the demise. The president of the National Conference Mr. Farooq Abdullah wrote a message that “The deceased was a devoted, passionate and thoughtful medical doctor. My heartfelt condolence to the family”. The vice president of the National Conference has shown his condolence and wrote, “The news of passing away of Aijaz Sahib has saddened me. My prayers are with the family in this tough times”. The Democratic Party President Mehboob Mufti has also expressed his grief over the demise of Dr.Mirza.

He has written that “My heartfelt condolence with the family, May his soul rest in peace”. The PDP president said that ” Mirza Afzal Beg was not only the son of Dr. Aijaz Beg, but he has also worked in the general and marginalized sections of our society in different sectors”. Mehboob Beg Mirza was an Indian politician who has served as Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party and serves as a General Secretary to Jammu & Kashmir National Conference. He was the son of the stalwart Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg, the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, and the first Kashmiri Muslim cabinet minister in Maharaja Hari Singh’s cabinet.

Mehboob was practicing medicine and studied MBBS from Srinagar Medical College. He has joined state politics in 1980. He became a member of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly two times, once in 1983-1987 and the second time in 2002 – 2008. He was a member of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Council and the officials said that he was to be given a Home ministry in 2008. He became the health minister of Jammu & Kashmir and also provincial president of the Jammu & Kashmir COnference from 2003 to 2009. He has served as the General Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress Party. He has become the Vice President of Indo-Botswana Parliamentary Friendship.

He has honored with the Bharat Gaurav Award in the field of politics. In 2004, he has won the Best Leader Award by Jammu & Kashmir Police. He was supposed to be the candidate for Assembly elections but he has withdrawn his candidature and joined Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 2014 in the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party. He has selected as a member of the 15th Lok Sabha from the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency of Jammu & Kashmir. He has also served in the cabinet and known for his work in South Kashmir.
