He had been one of the greatest players in Gamerocks’ program history. One of the major victories that came in his tenure had been the 37-36 win that came after conquering Alabama. There is also a point to note that the win came after the 9/11 incident which was a very tragic incident and is still felt as a dark moment in our history. That victory was a slight relief at that time and made its contribution in the best way possible.
As I told you already that he is a legendary player who has also played as a quarterback in the history of South Carolina football. However, it is very sad to say that he has now passed away. He was 43 years old at the time of his passing. He had played for three years as a starter for Gamecocks and was playing under the guidance of coach Lou Holtz.
Back in 1999, he was only a part-time starter but a year later, he had turned into a full-time starter. His debut as a full-time starter came for the Fighting Cocks where they were able to conjure an 8-4 victory in that season which landed him a spot in the Inland Bowl as well. Phil was leading his team to success, however, he was also succeeding as an individual player. He was also named as a finalist for Johnny Yoo and was able to win the award for being the top quarterback of the country. He was also on the final list of TASS awards. He was made the captain of Gamecocks in 2001 after his tremendous performance.
Phil was recently appointed as a co-offensive coordinator by the Gray Academy which was run by his close friend and former teammate. This is safe to say that a portion of his career was spent as a coach. However, he still had a lot to give to the young ones that were going to come forward in football. It was tragic that they had to lose the opportunity to learn from a legend. Apart from the legendary victory in the Outback Bowl, the most commendable victory was a 21-10 which was a home victory over Georgia which came in 2000. His death has left a lot of his fans and his family and teammates in a state of depression and their loss cannot be expressed in words. We pray that the legend can rest in peace.
