Angelo Raffaele Sodano is a popular face in Rome and he is from Isola d’Asti. His family is still rich and his father who passed away in 1991 at the age of 90 was a Christian Democrat deputy in the parliament of Italy. He had served the nation in three different terms from 1948 to 1963. He completed his basic education and college degree from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Later he pursued a doctorate in Theology as well as in canon law.

He wanted to pursue a diplomatic career hence he joined the service of the Holy See, he also worked in Latin America, and he served as secretary in nunciatures. He also introduced the various talent that he spoke Italian, English as well as Spanish, German, and French. Later he was appointed apostolic nuncio and titular archbishop of Chile and Nova Caesaris respectively. He had been elected Cardinal Secretary of State by the people on 29 June 1991. He took the place of Agostino Casaroli who completed his time period and retired on 1 December 1990.
