Indian writer, and popular historian, Babasaheb Purandare who was also popular as a theatre personality passed away at the age of 99 on Monday, November 15, 2021. According to sources, he was hospitalized a couple of days ago at a private hospital in Pune because of his age-related ailments and had been on ventilator support since he was admitted.

The demise of the historian was announced by the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray and he died at around 5 AM. Indian politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his death and shared his condolence on Twitter. PM Narendra Modi wrote his feelings and shared his picture alongside Babasaheb Purandare.

Babasaheb Purandare who was an authority on the 17th Century Maratha Warrior King Chhatrapati Shivaji was diagnosed with pneumonia and his treatment was undergoing at the Pune’s Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. His condition was worse since Sunday evening and he was suffering from critical condition after shifting on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He was also known for his moniker “Shivsahir”, Babasaheb Purandare is considered as one of the pre-eminent authorities on Warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is heartbreaking news for his family that Mr. Purandare is no more alive.

The last rites of Babasaheb Purandare will be performed at 10:30 AM at Vaikunth crematorium in Pune. According to the sources, Mr. Purandare was hospitalized after he fell in the bathroom. PM Modi said,” Shivshahir was witty, wise, and had a rich knowledge of our Indian history”. He was honored with Maharashtra Bhushan Award in 2015 and Padma Vibhushan Award in 2019, which is the second-highest civilian award.

He was born on July 29 1922 in Saswad, Poona, British India. At a very young age, he started to write stories related to the period of Shivaji’s reign, and later, the written scripts of Purandare were published officially with the title “Thinagya”. He also wrote other books including Raja Shiva-Chatrapati and Kesari.

His wife was Nirmala Purandare who was a veteran social activist but she left the world in 2019. Some of the politicians also protested against Babasaheb Purandare who believes that he has sullied the reputation of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Raja shivchatrapati was a 2008 TV show depicting the life of king Shivaji was based on the Raja Shiva-Chatrapati novel which was written by Babasaheb Purandare. He was also a director of “Jaanta Raja” which is a popular play on the life of Chhatrapati. He was a great man and a great soul who was popular for his work and novels. Today, a great soul has gone from this world. May his soul rest in peace.
